International Institute for Sustainability Research & Innovation
Jonathan Pierce leads IISRI’s climate resilience work, focusing on adaptation strategy, environmental risk planning, sustainable communities, and practical research that supports institutions facing climate-related challenges.
Jonathan Pierce serves as Head of Climate Resilience at IISRI, where he leads academic and applied research initiatives focused on climate adaptation, resilience planning, and sustainable community development. His work supports the institute’s mission to help organizations, policymakers, and communities understand environmental risks and prepare effective long-term responses.
His role combines research leadership, policy awareness, and practical planning. He works with faculty, fellows, research assistants, and external partners to develop climate resilience frameworks that are clear, evidence-based, and useful for real-world decision-making.
As department head, Jonathan guides IISRI’s work on climate risk, adaptation planning, environmental vulnerability, and resilience-focused development. He supports research projects that examine how climate pressures affect infrastructure, communities, ecosystems, public systems, and institutional planning.
His leadership helps connect scientific research with practical resilience strategies. By encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration, he ensures that IISRI’s climate resilience work includes environmental, social, economic, and governance perspectives.
Jonathan’s work places strong emphasis on climate adaptation. He supports the development of strategies that help communities and institutions prepare for changing environmental conditions, including extreme weather, resource stress, infrastructure vulnerability, and long-term ecological change.
His approach focuses on proactive planning rather than reactive response. Through applied research and structured analysis, he helps identify risks, strengthen adaptive capacity, and support sustainable planning for communities and organizations.
Jonathan works closely with academic researchers, policy stakeholders, environmental organizations, and institutional partners to advance climate resilience knowledge. He believes that meaningful climate solutions require collaboration between research, policy, and practice.
His department supports research that can inform public policy, guide sustainability programs, and improve institutional preparedness. Through collaborative projects, he helps translate complex climate challenges into practical strategies that can be used by decision-makers.
A central part of Jonathan’s work is supporting the development of sustainable and resilient communities. He focuses on how communities can build stronger systems, protect vulnerable populations, improve environmental planning, and prepare for future uncertainty.
At IISRI, Jonathan continues to strengthen climate resilience research by promoting practical solutions, responsible planning, and long-term sustainability. His work reflects a commitment to helping institutions and communities move toward a more prepared, adaptive, and sustainable future.
